Drive Belt Tensioner - automatic tensioner for the front-end accessory drive on the AJ20 Ingenium petrol engine range.
A spring-loaded pivoting arm carrying an idler pulley bears against the V-ribbed serpentine belt, holding belt tension constant as the belt beds in and stretches, and damping the torsional pulses fed into the belt by the crankshaft. Consistent tension keeps the belt-driven ancillaries turning without slip and stops the belt tracking off its pulleys.
Applies to the petrol Ingenium range only - 1.5L three-cylinder, 2.0L four-cylinder and 3.0L six-cylinder. A failing tensioner typically presents as belt squeal on cold start, a visibly oscillating tensioner arm with the engine running, or accelerated wear along the belt edges.
