The damper controls oscillation of the rear spring, damping body movement and keeping the rear wheels loaded against the road surface under braking, cornering and over uneven ground. It is a passive unit and is not a substitute for an electronically controlled adaptive damper.

Worn dampers present as float or wallow over undulations, continued body movement after a bump, and fluid seepage down the damper body. Replace in axle pairs so the damping rate stays matched from side to side.
