This product is the original part designed and produced by the vehicle manufacturer.
Variable Timing Solenoid - camshaft timing oil control valve in the variable valve timing system of the Ingenium engine range.
The solenoid is an electrohydraulic control valve mounted in the cylinder head, sitting directly in the oil feed to the camshaft phaser. The engine control module drives it with a pulse-width-modulated signal; the spool inside meters pressurised engine oil to the advance or retard chamber of the phaser, rotating the camshaft relative to the crankshaft so that valve timing tracks engine load and speed. Correct phasing is what delivers the low-speed torque, high-speed breathing and internal exhaust gas recirculation the engine is calibrated around.
Because the valve regulates filtered engine oil, contamination or a spool that sticks in one position is a common failure mode, usually logged as a camshaft timing over-advanced, over-retarded or not-achieved fault and often accompanied by a rough idle or reduced power. Oil condition and service history are worth checking whenever one of these valves has failed.
