Crankshaft Seal & Retainer – Rear is the rear main oil seal together with its carrier plate, mounted to the rear face of the cylinder block on the 4.4L DOHC V8 diesel engine.

The retainer locates and supports the seal where the crankshaft exits the block towards the flywheel, sealing engine oil at the rear main journal and preventing leakage into the bellhousing.

Frequently asked questions

What does the rear crankshaft seal and retainer do on the TDV8 engine?
The rear crankshaft seal and retainer is the rear main oil seal with its carrier plate, mounted to the rear face of the cylinder block on the 4.4L V8 diesel. It seals engine oil where the crankshaft exits towards the flywheel, stopping leaks into the bellhousing.
Which Land Rover models use this rear crankshaft seal?
This rear crankshaft seal fits the 4.4L V8 diesel in the Range Rover L322 2010-2012, Range Rover L405 2013-2022, and Range Rover Sport L494 2014-2022. It's for the TDV8 and SDV8 engine only.
Why does the rear crankshaft seal fail, and when should it be replaced?
The rear crankshaft seal usually fails as its lip hardens and wears with age and heat, causing an oil leak at the back of the engine. Replace it if oil pools at the bellhousing. It's best done whenever the gearbox or flywheel is off.
Is replacing the rear crankshaft seal a workshop job?
Replacing the rear crankshaft seal typically means removing the gearbox and flywheel to reach the rear of the block, so it's usually a workshop job. The retainer plate must seat square to the block for the seal to run true.
