Power Steering Fluid Reservoir for the hydraulic power-assisted steering circuit.
The reservoir holds the circuit's working fluid, feeds the power steering pump inlet and receives the low-pressure return from the steering gear, giving entrained air time to separate out before the fluid is drawn back into the pump.
A cracked body, perished neck or damaged cap seating causes fluid loss and aeration, which shows up as a whining pump and heavy or inconsistent steering assistance. The circuit must be bled and the fluid level set with the engine running after the reservoir is renewed.
