Grommet for the inspection aperture in the rear brake backplate. The backplate carries an access hole through which the parking brake shoe adjuster is reached and lining wear can be checked; the grommet closes that aperture once the work is done.

With the grommet in place the parking brake chamber inside the disc hat is sealed against water, salt spray and road dirt, which would otherwise corrode the adjuster thread and contaminate the linings. It is removed for adjustment and refitted afterwards.

The grommet is a friction fit in the backplate and is normally renewed along with the parking brake shoes - once disturbed, a hardened or distorted grommet no longer seals against the pressed steel.
