Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor for the rear, post-catalyst position in the exhaust system.

Mounted in the downpipe downstream of the catalytic converter, this sensor monitors the oxygen content of the gas leaving the catalyst. The engine management ECU compares its signal against the pre-catalyst sensor to assess catalyst conversion efficiency and to apply long-term trim correction to closed-loop fuelling. Unlike the pre-catalyst sensor it does not control fuelling directly, so a failed unit generally presents as a catalyst efficiency or sensor circuit fault code rather than as a driveability complaint.

Apply anti-seize compound to the sensor thread only when fitting, and keep the sensor tip free of grease and other contamination.

Frequently asked questions

What does this rear oxygen sensor do?
This rear oxygen sensor sits after the catalytic converter and monitors how well the cat is working on the Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 and Freelander 1. The ECU uses its signal for catalyst efficiency and emissions checks. It's a Bosch after-cat (downstream) sensor.
Which models and variants does it fit?
This rear oxygen sensor fits the Discovery 2 4.0 V8, Range Rover P38 4.0/4.6 V8 EFI (from VIN XA onward) and Freelander 1 2.5 KV6 on CDN, MEX and USA cars from VIN 2A000001. Check your VIN and market, as fitment is market-specific on the Freelander.
What are the signs the rear oxygen sensor has failed?
A failed rear oxygen sensor typically triggers a check-engine light with a catalyst efficiency or downstream sensor fault code. It affects fuelling less than the front sensor, but it will fail an emissions test. Replacing the downstream sensor clears the fault on the Discovery 2, P38 or Freelander 1.
