Glow plug for the diesel cold-start pre-heating system. It threads into the cylinder head with the heater tip projecting into the combustion chamber, raising in-cylinder temperature before and during cranking so injected fuel ignites reliably from cold.
The plug is energised by the glow plug relay under engine management control, and continues to glow for a short period after start-up (post-heating) to steady running and cut cold-start smoke. Four are required on the 2.0L M47 four-cylinder Td4; six on the 3.0L M57 six-cylinder Td6.
A failed glow plug shows as extended cranking from cold, a misfire in the first seconds after start-up, or an illuminated glow plug warning lamp. Renewing the full set at the same time is normal practice, since the remaining plugs will be of similar age.
