LR009163 - Headlamp Bulb – HID D3S
D3S is a mercury-free high-intensity discharge type rated at 35W and operating at approximately 42V. It has no filament: light is produced by an arc struck across two electrodes inside a xenon-filled quartz capsule. Unlike bulb types with an igniter built into the base, D3S requires a separate igniter, which generates the high-voltage pulse that strikes the arc; the headlamp ballast then regulates the running current.
In a bi-xenon projector one discharge bulb provides both dipped and main beam, the change between the two being made by a moving shield within the unit, so this bulb is the light source for both functions. Halogen headlamp units have no ballast or igniter circuit and cannot use it.
Isolate the headlamp supply before working on a discharge unit - the igniter output is at several kilovolts. Do not touch the quartz capsule with bare fingers, and renew bulbs in pairs so that brightness and colour stay matched across the vehicle.
