Brand Bosch
Crankshaft position sensor for 3.0L V6 and 4.4L V8 diesel engines, part of the engine management sensing circuit.

The sensor sits at the crankshaft reluctor ring and reads the passing teeth to give the engine control module a continuous crankshaft speed and angular position signal. That signal is the timing reference for fuel injection and glow plug control, and the primary input for idle governing and the engine speed and misfire monitoring strategies.

A failing sensor typically produces extended cranking, intermittent stalling, a no-start with no tachometer reading, or a stored crankshaft/camshaft correlation fault.

Note: not suitable for the 360PS version of the 306DT engine.

Frequently asked questions

What does the crankshaft position sensor do?
The crankshaft position sensor reads the teeth on the crankshaft reluctor ring and feeds the engine control module a live crank speed and angle signal. That signal is the timing reference for fuel injection and glow plug control, and the main input for idle governing and misfire detection. Without it the engine won't run.
Which engines and models does this sensor fit?
It fits the 3.0 litre V6 diesel across the Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L320 and L494, and Range Rover Velar L560, plus the 4.4 litre V8 diesel on the L405 and L494. It's a diesel sensor, so it doesn't cover the petrol engines in those ranges.
What is the 360PS exclusion and does it affect me?
This sensor isn't suitable for the 360PS version of the 306DT engine. The 306DT is the 3.0 litre V6 diesel, and it was built in more than one power output, with the 360PS variant taking a different sensor. Check your engine output in the vehicle build data before ordering if you run a higher output V6.
What are the symptoms of a failing crank sensor?
Extended cranking, intermittent stalling, or a no start with a dead tachometer are the usual signs. A stored crankshaft to camshaft correlation fault points the same way. Failures are often heat related on the 3.0 V6 diesel, so the engine may start from cold and then refuse to restart once hot.
