Brand Denso
Lambda Sensor (exhaust oxygen sensor) for the exhaust and engine management system of V6 and V8 petrol engines.

The sensor threads into the front pipe and catalyst assembly and measures residual oxygen in the exhaust gas stream. The engine control module uses the signal both to maintain closed-loop air/fuel control and to monitor catalyst conversion efficiency; the mounting position within the exhaust determines which of those roles it serves on a given application.

The unit is heated so it reaches operating temperature shortly after a cold start. It is not serviceable and is replaced complete.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MHK500960 lambda sensor?
The MHK500960 is an exhaust lambda (oxygen) sensor that threads into the front pipe and catalyst assembly. It measures residual oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can hold closed-loop fuelling. It fits V6 and V8 petrol Discovery 3, Range Rover L322 and Range Rover Sport L320.
Which position is this lambda sensor?
This is the upstream exhaust oxygen sensor in the front pipe and catalyst. On the Range Rover L322 it's the left-hand lower oxygen sensor. It trims fuelling directly, unlike the post-catalyst sensor, so it must be fitted in the correct pre-cat position.
Are there VIN limits on this lambda sensor?
Yes. On the Discovery 3 4.0L V6 it applies to VIN 9A999999, and on the Range Rover L322 it applies from VIN 7A000001. It also fits the Range Rover Sport L320 4.2 supercharged and 4.4 V8. Confirm your VIN before ordering.
Why do lambda sensors fail?
Lambda sensors typically fail from age, soot or oil contamination, or a slow response as the element degrades, which triggers the engine light and poor economy. A lazy sensor upsets closed-loop fuelling, so it's renewed to restore correct mixture control on these V8 and V6 petrol engines.
