The pump is electrically driven and runs independently of engine speed, circulating coolant through the supercharger charge-air cooler and its low-temperature radiator. This keeps charge-air temperature controlled at idle and at low engine speeds, when the engine-driven main coolant pump alone would not provide sufficient flow. It operates as a separate circuit alongside the main engine cooling system.
