Mass Air Flow Sensor - air mass meter fitted in the induction tract as part of the engine management system.

The sensor sits in the intake ducting immediately downstream of the air cleaner element and upstream of the throttle body, measuring the mass of air drawn into the engine and reporting it to the engine control module. That signal underpins the base fuelling and ignition calculations, so a contaminated or drifting sensor commonly shows as poor idle quality, hesitation, reduced power or raised fuel consumption before a fault code is stored.

The sensing element is fragile: handle the unit by its housing and do not attempt to clean the element with solvent.

Frequently asked questions

What does the PHF000140 mass air flow sensor do?
The PHF000140 mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine so the ECU can set the correct fuel mix. It fits several petrol Land Rover and Range Rover models.
Which vehicles does this MAF sensor fit?
This MAF sensor fits petrol engines only across the Discovery 3 and 4, Freelander 2, Range Rover L322 and Range Rover Sport L320. It covers the 4.0 Cologne V6, 4.4 AJ V8, 4.2 supercharged and 3.2 I6. Diesel models use a different sensor.
What are the signs of a failing MAF sensor?
MAF sensors fail as the sensing element contaminates or ages, typically causing poor running, hesitation, rough idle and a check-engine light on these petrol V6 and V8 engines. A faulty MAF often triggers fuelling fault codes.
Where is the MAF sensor located?
The MAF sensor typically sits in the intake ductwork between the air filter box and the throttle body. It's usually held by a couple of screws with an electrical connector.
Can I fit this MAF sensor myself?
Replacing the MAF sensor is typically a DIY job. You usually unplug the connector, undo the fixings and swap the sensor. Avoid touching the delicate sensing element during fitting.
