Mass Air Flow Sensor - air mass meter fitted in the induction tract as part of the engine management system.

The sensor sits in the intake ducting immediately downstream of the air cleaner element and upstream of the throttle body, measuring the mass of air drawn into the engine and reporting it to the engine control module. That signal underpins the base fuelling and ignition calculations, so a contaminated or drifting sensor commonly shows as poor idle quality, hesitation, reduced power or raised fuel consumption before a fault code is stored.

The sensing element is fragile: handle the unit by its housing and do not attempt to clean the element with solvent.

Frequently asked questions

What does the PHF000140G mass air flow sensor do?
The PHF000140G mass air flow sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine so the ECU can set the correct fuel quantity. It's fitted to several petrol Land Rover and Range Rover V6 and V8 models, and accurate readings keep fuelling and running smooth.
Where is the MAF sensor located?
The mass air flow sensor sits in the intake ducting between the air filter box and the throttle, on the petrol Discovery 3 and 4, Freelander 2, Range Rover L322, and Range Rover Sport L320. It reads incoming air just downstream of the air filter.
What are the symptoms of a faulty MAF sensor?
A faulty mass air flow sensor typically causes hesitation, poor throttle response, rough idle, higher fuel use, or a limp-home mode with a check-engine light. On these petrol V6 and V8 engines a contaminated or failing sensor sends the ECU wrong air readings, upsetting fuelling.
Does this MAF sensor fit diesel models too?
This mass air flow sensor is listed for petrol engines only, including the 4.0 V6, 4.4 V8, 4.2 supercharged V8, and 3.2 I6. Discovery 3 fits to VIN 9A999999 and Discovery 4 from VIN AA000001. Confirm your engine and VIN, since diesel variants use a different sensor.
