Transmission Oil Cooler in the automatic gearbox cooling circuit.

Automatic transmission fluid is routed out of the gearbox and through the cooler's finned matrix, where it gives up heat before returning to the box. Holding the fluid within its working temperature range keeps the ATF at its designed viscosity and protects the clutch packs, torque converter and valve body from heat-related wear - most significant under towing, low-range work and sustained high load. Applies to the ZF 6-speed and 8-speed automatic transmissions used behind the V6 and V8 diesel engines.

Supplied as a complete cooler assembly. A corroded or externally leaking matrix cannot be repaired, and overheating caused by a restricted cooler will shorten transmission life well before any warning is displayed.
