Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor for the diesel exhaust aftertreatment system, fitted to vehicles equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The sensor threads into a boss in the exhaust and reports gas temperature to the engine control module through its harness connector. The ECM uses these readings to protect the catalyst and turbocharger against over-temperature and to govern the DPF regeneration cycle, which depends on accurate exhaust temperature to burn off accumulated soot.

A failed or drifting sensor typically logs an exhaust temperature fault and prevents regeneration from completing.
