High-Mounted Rear Stop Lamp - the centre high-mounted stop lamp, commonly called the third brake light, within the rear lighting system.

Mounted centrally at the rear of the vehicle above the main rear lamp clusters, it illuminates in parallel with the main stop lamps whenever the brake pedal switch closes the stop lamp circuit. This gives the raised secondary brake signal required by lighting regulations, positioned in the following driver's direct line of sight.

Failure is normally caused by water ingress past the mounting seal or by a chafed feed in the tailgate harness, and presents as a dead or intermittently lit unit while the main stop lamps continue to work.
