What does the rear shock absorber do?
The rear shock absorber is a hydraulic telescopic damper for the coil-sprung Discovery 2 without ACE. Mounted between the rear axle and chassis beside the coil spring, it damps spring oscillation to control body movement and keep the tyres on the road. This is the non-ACE specification.
Should rear shocks be replaced in pairs?
Rear shock absorbers are replaced as an axle pair on the Discovery 2, so a full job needs two. Fitting one new and one worn damper leaves damping unbalanced side to side, which upsets handling. Renewing both keeps the rear settled and predictable.
What are the signs the rear shocks are worn?
Worn rear dampers typically cause body float and bounce over bumps, poor control on rough roads and uneven or cupped rear tyre wear. The internal valving and seals wear with age and mileage. Fresh shocks on the Discovery 2 restore ride control and stability.
