It's compressed as the flange is bolted up to keep the joint gas-tight. Fits the Defender 2007-2016 and the 2.2L diesel Discovery Sport, Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque.

What are the signs this exhaust gasket has failed?

A failing front pipe to catalyst gasket typically blows at the flange, giving a blowing or ticking exhaust noise under the car and sometimes a smell of fumes. Replace it whenever the front pipe or catalyst is unbolted, since the crushed gasket won't reseal. A leak here can also upset downstream sensor readings.
