Hoofdkoppelingscilinder bevindt zich aan het begin van het hydraulische ontkoppelingscircuit van de koppeling, gemonteerd op de pedalenbox en direct bediend door het koppelingspedaal.

Wanneer het pedaal wordt ingedrukt, zet de cilinder hydraulische vloeistof onder druk en levert deze via de koppelingsleiding aan de hulpkoppelingscilinder, die de koppeling ontkoppelt om het schakelen mogelijk te maken. Het wordt gebruikt bij handgeschakelde transmissies.

Een versleten hoofdkoppelingscilinder lekt intern en verliest druk, wat resulteert in een zacht of wegzakkend pedaal en onvolledige ontkoppeling van de koppeling; deze unit is een directe vervanging voor de originele, op de pedalenbox gemonteerde cilinder.
