Frequently asked questions

What does the flywheel do on the 2.25 petrol engine?
The flywheel bolts to the rear of the crankshaft on the 2.25 petrol engine in its 3-bearing form, fitted to the Land Rover Series 2, 2A and 3. It stores rotational inertia to smooth engine running, carries the starter ring gear for cranking, and provides the friction face for the clutch.
When does the flywheel need replacing or refacing?
The flywheel typically needs attention when the friction face is scored, heat-cracked or worn, or when the starter ring gear teeth are chipped and the starter grinds. It's usually inspected and refaced or replaced during a clutch change, since the gearbox has to come off to reach it.
Which engine does this flywheel fit?
This flywheel fits only the 2.25 petrol engine in its 3-main-bearing form on the Land Rover Series 2, 2A and 3. It doesn't suit the later 5-bearing engine or the diesel. Confirm your engine is the 3-bearing 2.25 petrol before ordering, as the flywheel differs between engine variants.
