What is the ERC4989 gasket used for?

The ERC4989 is an exhaust manifold gasket. It seals the joint between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head, stopping exhaust gas leaking out where the manifold bolts to the engine.

Which engines does it fit?

This gasket fits the 3.5 litre V8 twin-carb petrol engine in the Defender and Series, and the VM diesel (26D/27D/30D) in the Range Rover Classic to VIN HA610293. Confirm your engine and VIN before ordering.

What are the signs the gasket has failed?

A blown exhaust manifold gasket usually shows as a ticking or blowing noise that rises with revs, plus an exhaust smell and sometimes scorching near the joint. Left alone it can crack the manifold or warp the mating face.

When should it be replaced?

Replace the manifold gasket whenever the exhaust manifold is removed, and always renew it rather than refitting the old one. Check the manifold and head faces are clean and flat before fitting the new gasket.
