Frequently asked questions

What is the AAU3381LR pinion oil seal for?
The AAU3381LR pinion oil seal seals the drive pinion shaft where it enters the Salisbury rear differential. It sits at the nose of the diff housing, running against the pinion flange behind the propshaft. It keeps axle oil in and water and dirt out of the pinion bearings.
Does this seal fit any Land Rover rear axle?
This seal is specific to the Salisbury rear differential, the heavy-duty axle used on the Series III 109-inch and the Defender 110 and 130. It won't suit the lighter Rover-type axles. Confirm your vehicle has the Salisbury diff before ordering.
Why does a pinion oil seal leak and when should it be replaced?
A pinion oil seal leaks as the lip hardens or the flange surface wears, showing as oil at the nose of the differential. Replace it whenever the pinion flange or nut is disturbed. On the Salisbury axle, ignored oil loss can starve the pinion head bearing.
What are the alternative part numbers for this seal?
This seal also cross-references to RTC1010, AEU2515 and 8HA-019-5, so a match against any of those confirms the right part. Inspect the pinion flange sealing surface when fitting, since a scored flange will quickly ruin a new seal.
