Frequently asked questions

What is the AAU3381 pinion oil seal used for?
The AAU3381 pinion oil seal seals the drive pinion shaft where it enters the Salisbury rear differential. It runs against the pinion flange behind the propshaft coupling, keeping axle oil in and water and grit out of the pinion bearings. It fits the heavy-duty Salisbury rear axle only.
What are the signs this pinion seal needs replacing?
The usual sign is axle oil weeping from the nose of the differential, often showing as oil on the pinion flange or propshaft coupling. On the Salisbury axle a leaking seal can drop the oil level and starve the pinion head bearing, so it's worth renewing once a leak appears.
Should the pinion seal be replaced whenever the pinion is disturbed?
Yes, replace the pinion oil seal whenever the pinion flange or pinion nut is disturbed. The seal runs against the flange face, so refitting an old seal typically leads to a repeat leak. Inspect the flange sealing surface for wear or grooving at the same time.
Which Land Rovers does this Salisbury pinion seal fit?
This pinion seal fits models running the Salisbury rear differential, including the Series III 109 inch and the Defender 110 and 130. Check that your vehicle has the Salisbury heavy-duty rear axle rather than the Rover-type axle, as the pinion seal differs between them.
