Frequently asked questions

What does the pinion seal do on a Salisbury axle?
The pinion seal seals the nose of the pinion shaft where the propshaft flange meets the Salisbury differential. It keeps the hypoid gear oil inside the final drive and stops leaks around the rotating pinion. It presses into the front face of the diff housing.
Which axles and models does this pinion seal fit?
This pinion seal fits the Salisbury axle only, not the Rover-type axle. It covers Series III 109-inch rear axles and 109-inch 1-ton front axles, plus Defender 110 and 130 with the Salisbury rear axle built from 1983 to 2006, up to VIN WA159806. Confirm you have a Salisbury axle first.
Why does this seal use a leather lip?
This variant uses a leather sealing lip, the material originally specified for early Salisbury axles. Some rebuilders prefer leather when restoring early vehicles to keep them period-correct. It runs on the outer diameter of the pinion shaft, the same as the later synthetic-lip seals.
Should the pinion seal be replaced whenever the flange is removed?
Yes, replace the pinion seal any time the propshaft flange or pinion nut is disturbed. Once the seal has been running it takes a set, and reusing it usually causes leaks. A weeping pinion seal typically shows as oil on the diff nose, flange or propshaft.
