Frequently asked questions

What does the oil thrower do in a Salisbury differential?
The oil thrower fits on the pinion shaft between the drive flange and the pinion oil seal in the Salisbury axle. As the pinion turns it slings lubricant back into the differential and away from the seal, keeping the seal from being flooded and stopping oil weeping past the pinion nose.
Should the oil thrower be replaced with the pinion seal?
Yes, the oil thrower is typically renewed together with the pinion oil seal whenever you reseal the Salisbury differential. It's already exposed once the drive flange is off, so it's usually replaced as a matter of course during the job.
Which Land Rovers use this Salisbury oil thrower?
This fits the Salisbury rear axle on the Land Rover Defender 110 and 130 from 1987 to 2006. Confirm your vehicle has the Salisbury axle rather than the Rover-type axle before ordering, using your chassis number.
