Frequently asked questions

What is the 300TDi cylinder head gasket and what does it do?
The cylinder head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and engine block on the Land Rover Defender 300TDi 2.5L turbo diesel. It maintains compression and separates the coolant and oil galleries between head and block. The 300TDi uses a single 1.6mm gasket with no grade notches.
Do I need to select a thickness grade for the 300TDi gasket?
No grade selection is needed for the 300TDi head gasket. Unlike some Land Rover diesels that use notched, graded thicknesses, the 300TDi uses a single 1.6mm gasket with no notches. There's no piston protrusion measurement to take first, so the same single gasket suits the 300TDi engine.
What are the signs the 300TDi head gasket has failed?
Signs of head gasket failure on the Defender 300TDi include coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, oil and coolant mixing, and overheating. These indicate the seal between head and block has broken down. Replacement means removing the head and checking it for flatness before refitting.
