What is the split pin used for?

The split pin secures the clevis pin at the accelerator cable and hand throttle cable connections on the Defender. Once fitted through the clevis pin, its legs are splayed apart to lock the pin in place and stop the cable end working loose under repeated throttle movement.

Can the split pin be reused?

No, a split pin is single-use. Once its legs have been splayed and later straightened for removal, the metal is fatigued and won't hold securely again. Fit a new split pin whenever you disconnect the accelerator or hand throttle cable clevis.

How many split pins are needed for the job?

Typically one split pin secures each cable clevis connection, so you'll usually need one per joint being reassembled. If you're refitting both the accelerator and hand throttle cables, plan for one pin at each clevis you disturb.
