Frequently asked questions

What does the front upper spring isolator do?
The front upper spring isolator is the rubber pad between the top of the front coil spring and its upper seat on the Discovery 2 (1998-2004). It locates the end of the spring and cushions it against the seat, preventing metal-to-metal contact and damping noise and vibration that would otherwise reach the body.
What are the signs the spring isolator needs replacing?
A perished, flattened or missing spring isolator typically shows as knocking or clonking from the front suspension, as the coil spring contacts its seat directly. On the Discovery 2 these rubber pads harden and break up with age. Replacing the isolator restores the cushioning and quietens the knock.
How many spring isolators do I need, and is it worth doing both sides?
You need one upper isolator per front spring, so two to do the front axle as a pair on the Discovery 2. It's typically worth renewing both sides at once, since the pads age at the same rate and doing one often leaves a knock from the other side.
