Instrument Voltage Stabiliser - a thermal bimetallic unit mounted on the back of the instrument cluster that regulates the supply voltage to the fuel level and coolant temperature gauges.

The stabiliser outputs a pulsed mean voltage of approximately 10V regardless of battery state, ensuring consistent and accurate gauge readings. Without regulation, gauge indications would shift with changes in system voltage. Also referred to as an instrument voltage regulator.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Instrument Voltage Stabiliser do on a Defender or Series?
This thermal bimetallic unit mounts on the back of the instrument cluster and regulates the supply voltage to the fuel level and temperature gauges, ensuring consistent and accurate readings regardless of battery state or engine load.
How do I know if the voltage stabiliser has failed?
If both the fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge read incorrectly or erratically at the same time, the voltage stabiliser is typically the cause. Either both gauges deflect to maximum, read zero, or oscillate together, pointing to a failed stabiliser rather than a faulty gauge.
Which Land Rovers does the 148876 voltage stabiliser fit?
Fits Land Rover Series III (all engine variants), Defender 1983-2006, and Jaguar/Daimler Limousine (1968-1992). The alternative code is 579468.
