Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal seated in the crankshaft rear oil seal housing at the back of the cylinder block, sealing the point where the crankshaft exits the block toward the flywheel.

It runs against the rear of the crankshaft to retain engine oil within the crankcase and prevent leakage at the crankshaft-to-flywheel interface, where oil loss can contaminate the clutch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal and what does it do?
The Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal sits in the crankshaft rear oil seal housing at the back of the cylinder block on the Td5 2.5L five-cylinder turbo diesel engine. It runs against the crankshaft to retain engine oil where the crank exits toward the flywheel.
Which Land Rovers use this rear crankshaft oil seal?
The Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal fits the Td5 engine as installed in the Land Rover Defender (1998-2006) and Discovery 2 (1999-2004). It seals the crankshaft-to-flywheel end of the block on these five-cylinder diesels.
What are the signs the rear crankshaft oil seal needs replacing?
A failing Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal typically shows as an oil leak at the back of the engine, which can contaminate the clutch on the Td5. It's usually renewed while the gearbox or clutch is already off, since access requires removing the flywheel.
