Battery earth cable, 1170 mm long - the main negative lead of the starting and charging circuit.

It connects the battery negative terminal to the chassis earth point and carries the return current for the starter motor, alternator and the rest of the vehicle electrical system. Corroded, stretched or poorly terminated earth leads are a common cause of slow cranking and erratic charging, so both connections should be clean and tight on refitting.
