The tank serves as the system's pressurised reservoir and fill point, accommodating the expansion and contraction of coolant as engine temperature changes and allowing entrained air to separate from the coolant. It carries the pressure cap that regulates system pressure, and replaces the earlier metal or plastic tank.

What does the coolant expansion tank do?
The coolant expansion tank is the cooling system's pressurised reservoir and fill point. It takes up the expansion and contraction of coolant as engine temperature changes and lets trapped air separate out. It also carries the pressure cap that regulates system pressure.
Which models does this black expansion tank fit?
It fits the Defender 200 and 300 TDi (non-EGR), Discovery 1 (all except V8 twin carburettor) and Range Rover Classic 2.5 diesel, VM diesel and V8 EFi. It replaces the earlier metal or plastic tank.
Why do these expansion tanks need replacing?
The plastic expansion tank goes brittle with age and heat cycling, so it typically cracks around the seams or the cap neck and loses coolant and pressure. A worn cap seal also lets system pressure escape.
