Brake discs across the Land Rover brake parts range vary more widely than pads. The same model generation often runs different disc diameters at the front and rear axle, and trim level or towing specification can change the disc size on the same platform. Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport L320 share the IBF chassis and similar front axle disc sizing, but the rear caliper and disc arrangement differs depending on whether the vehicle has the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494 run the heavier D7u platform with correspondingly larger disc diameters front and rear.

Disc Types and Fitment Scope

Land Rover and Range Rover brake discs are manufactured to two main profiles: ventilated and solid. Ventilated discs have internal airflow channels cast between the two friction faces, allowing air to circulate and dissipate heat as the wheel spins. Solid discs are a single flat casting with no internal channels. The front axle uses ventilated discs across Defender Classic Puma-era and later models, most Discovery generations, all Freelander variants, and all Range Rover platforms from the P38 onwards. Discovery 1 has both solid and vented front disc applications depending on chassis and specification, so always verify by VIN. Rear axle specification varies: lighter platforms such as Freelander 2 and Discovery 2 use solid rear discs, while heavier platforms including Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494, and Discovery 5 use ventilated rear discs as well.

OEM vs aftermarket: For brake discs on EU-registered vehicles, ECE R90 approval is the legal minimum standard, not a premium quality signal. Replacement discs sold for passenger cars registered after November 2016 must carry R90 approval, which requires dimensional and performance tolerances within a specified range of the original equipment part. Aftermarket discs from Ferodo and TRW carry R90 approval on relevant part numbers and meet OE tolerances. Genuine Land Rover discs are the correct fit-and-forget choice where cost is secondary. The risk is not in choosing aftermarket over OEM: it is in choosing non-R90-approved parts from unknown suppliers. Always confirm R90 status before fitting.

Workshop Tip

Replace brake discs in axle pairs. Fitting one new disc and reusing the worn original on the opposite side of the same axle produces different friction surface profiles, causes uneven braking and pedal pulsation, and shortens the life of both the new disc and the new pads.

On cable-puller EPB platforms, the caliper piston compresses conventionally, though service mode or mechanical shoe adjustment is required when removing the disc or servicing the drum-in-disc parking brake shoes. Confirming the Right Disc for Your Vehicle

Ordering the correct brake disc requires three pieces of information: model and generation, axle position (front or rear), and build date. Build date matters because brake specifications can change mid-generation. Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 both ran on the L319 platform but have different disc diameters on some variants depending on engine and trim level. Range Rover L405 offered multiple brake packages depending on specification.

The VIN or chassis plate is the most reliable source of this information. On Land Rover and Range Rover models, the chassis plate is located on the A-pillar on RHD vehicles and on the passenger-side A-pillar on LHD vehicles. The VIN decodes the model year, body variant, and engine code, all of which can affect disc sizing on Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover L405 in particular.

If the vehicle has been fitted with uprated caliper carriers, larger aftermarket calipers, or a big brake kit, the disc diameter may no longer match the factory specification. Verify disc diameter and offset height before ordering if any brake system modifications have been made to the vehicle.

Common Fitting Notes for Land Rover Brake Discs

Surface rust on new or unused brake discs is normal and not a quality defect. Light orange surface oxidation on the friction face clears within the first few brake applications as the pad sweeps the disc surface clean. Deep pitting, grooves in the friction face, or a raised rust ridge at the outer or inner edge of the friction surface are different: these indicate the disc face is compromised and minimum thickness and surface condition should be checked before deciding whether to replace.

Minimum disc thickness is stamped or cast onto every disc, either on the disc hat or on the friction face edge. Check remaining thickness with a micrometer at a minimum of four points across the friction face before refitting. A disc within 1 mm of its minimum thickness at the point of fitting a new set of pads will need replacement before those pads wear out, making a second brake job unavoidable sooner than expected.

Important: Two different EPB architectures

Motor-on-caliper platforms (Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494, Discovery 5, and later equivalents): The electronic rear caliper motor must be retracted using diagnostic service mode before the caliper piston can be compressed. Forcing the piston without service mode damages the EPB motor and requires actuator replacement.

Cable-puller EPB platforms (Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport L320): The hydraulic rear caliper piston compresses conventionally. Service mode or mechanical shoe adjuster back-off is required when removing the rear disc or servicing the EPB shoe components inside the disc hat, not for caliper piston compression alone.

Lateral runout above 0.1 mm measured with a dial gauge on a newly fitted disc indicates either a contaminated hub face or a hub that needs checking for runout of its own. Clean the hub face thoroughly before fitting any disc, and check hub runout if the problem repeats after hub cleaning.

Replacement brake pads, shoes, discs and drums sold for EU road use must comply with the relevant ECE R90 rules for the vehicle type and registration period. For brake discs, the November 2016 extension is especially relevant for newer passenger vehicles: replacement discs for models first registered after that date must carry R90 approval, which requires dimensional and performance tolerances within a specified range of the original equipment part. This is a legal requirement, not a marketing designation. Check that the parts you are fitting carry the R90 approval mark before installation.
