OEM vs aftermarket: For brake discs on EU-registered vehicles, ECE R90 approval is the legal minimum standard, not a premium quality signal. Compatibility Confirming the Right Disc for Your Vehicle
Ordering the correct brake disc requires three pieces of information: model and generation, axle position (front or rear), and build date. Build date matters because brake specifications can change mid-generation. Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 both ran on the L319 platform but have different disc diameters on some variants depending on engine and trim level. Range Rover L405 offered multiple brake packages depending on specification.
The VIN or chassis plate is the most reliable source of this information. On Land Rover and Range Rover models, the chassis plate is located on the A-pillar on RHD vehicles and on the passenger-side A-pillar on LHD vehicles. The VIN decodes the model year, body variant, and engine code, all of which can affect disc sizing on Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover L405 in particular.
If the vehicle has been fitted with uprated caliper carriers, larger aftermarket calipers, or a big brake kit, the disc diameter may no longer match the factory specification. Verify disc diameter and offset height before ordering if any brake system modifications have been made to the vehicle.
Fitting Notes Common Fitting Notes for Land Rover Brake Discs
Surface rust on new or unused brake discs is normal and not a quality defect. Light orange surface oxidation on the friction face clears within the first few brake applications as the pad sweeps the disc surface clean. Deep pitting, grooves in the friction face, or a raised rust ridge at the outer or inner edge of the friction surface are different: these indicate the disc face is compromised and minimum thickness and surface condition should be checked before deciding whether to replace.
Minimum disc thickness is stamped or cast onto every disc, either on the disc hat or on the friction face edge. Check remaining thickness with a micrometer at a minimum of four points across the friction face before refitting. A disc within 1 mm of its minimum thickness at the point of fitting a new set of pads will need replacement before those pads wear out, making a second brake job unavoidable sooner than expected.
Important: Two different EPB architectures Motor-on-caliper platforms (Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494, Discovery 5, and later equivalents): The electronic rear caliper motor must be retracted using diagnostic service mode before the caliper piston can be compressed. Forcing the piston without service mode damages the EPB motor and requires actuator replacement.
Cable-puller EPB platforms (Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport L320): The hydraulic rear caliper piston compresses conventionally. Service mode or mechanical shoe adjuster back-off is required when removing the rear disc or servicing the EPB shoe components inside the disc hat, not for caliper piston compression alone.
Lateral runout above 0.1 mm measured with a dial gauge on a newly fitted disc indicates either a contaminated hub face or a hub that needs checking for runout of its own. Clean the hub face thoroughly before fitting any disc, and check hub runout if the problem repeats after hub cleaning.
Replacement brake pads, shoes, discs and drums sold for EU road use must comply with the relevant ECE R90 rules for the vehicle type and registration period. For brake discs, the November 2016 extension is especially relevant for newer passenger vehicles: replacement discs for models first registered after that date must carry R90 approval, which requires dimensional and performance tolerances within a specified range of the original equipment part.
