Heater Matrix in the HVAC heater assembly of the Defender 90/110.

The heater matrix is the heat-exchange core inside the heater box, through which hot engine coolant circulates to warm the air blown into the cabin. This unit is designed for non-air-conditioned models with horizontal inlet and outlet pipe connections, up to VIN WA159806 and for RHD vehicles from VIN XA159807 to 2A633474.

A failed or leaking heater matrix typically results in loss of cabin heat, a sweet coolant smell inside the vehicle, or misting of the windscreen from the inside. Replacement requires removal of the heater box from the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

What does the heater matrix do on a Defender?
The heater matrix is the heat-exchange core inside the Defender 90/110 heater box. Hot engine coolant passes through it to warm the air blown into the cabin. This one suits non-air-conditioned models with horizontal inlet and outlet pipes.
What are the signs of a failed heater matrix?
A failing Defender heater matrix typically leaks coolant, causing loss of cabin heat, a sweet smell inside, or misting on the inside of the windscreen. You may also notice a slowly dropping coolant level with no obvious external leak.
How do I know this is the right matrix for my Defender?
This fits Defender 90/110 non-AC models with horizontal pipe connections. Pipe orientation and AC fitment change the matrix, so check your heater box has horizontal inlet and outlet pipes and use your VIN to confirm the variant.
Is fitting a DIY job?
Replacing the heater matrix typically means removing the heater box from behind the dashboard, so it's an involved job rather than a quick swap. Budget time for dash trim removal and plan to drain and refill the cooling system.
