Vehicle Identification

Identifying your Discovery

The Discovery name covers vehicles built between 1989 and today across multiple distinct platforms and engine families. Ordering by model name alone is not sufficient for fitment accuracy. The correct identification method depends on the generation.

Discovery 1 (1989 to 1998): chassis number stamped on the right-hand side of the bulkhead, with a duplicate plate in the engine bay. Pre-1996 vehicles use a 17-character VIN format introduced in 1980 for export markets, while early UK-market cars may carry an 11-digit chassis number on the plate. Cross-reference with the V5C or registration document if the plate is corroded.

Discovery 2 (1998 to 2004): 17-digit VIN stamped on the right-hand bulkhead and on a plate visible through the windscreen base. The 10th character identifies the model year.

Discovery 3, 4, 5, and Discovery Sport: standard 17-digit VIN on the windscreen base plate, on the driver-side door jamb sticker, and in the V5C. The 10th character identifies model year. For Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 in particular, confirm model year via VIN before ordering suspension, engine, or driveline components, as both share the L319 platform code but have different engine variants, transmission options, and calibration specifications.

Three quality tiers run across the catalogue, and the right choice depends on the generation, the system, and how long you intend to keep the vehicle.

Genuine parts are boxed under the Land Rover or Jaguar Land Rover part number, produced to factory specification. For Discovery 3, 4, 5, and Discovery Sport, Genuine supply remains active and is the appropriate tier for warranty-sensitive repairs, air suspension components, and turbocharger or EGR replacement on the TDV6. For Discovery 1 and Discovery 2, Genuine supply has been thinning since 2010 and is restricted to selected service items.
