What does a brake caliper guide pin kit do?
The guide pins let a sliding front caliper move sideways on its bracket so both pads press evenly on the disc. SEE100340 is the front guide pin kit for the Freelander 1 from VIN 1A000001, covering all variants from that VIN.
Why do front guide pins seize on a Freelander 1?
Guide pins seize when the rubber boots split and let water and grit into the bore, washing out the grease. The pin then binds, the caliper stops sliding, and one pad wears far faster than the other. It is a common cause of uneven front pad wear.
Should guide pins be replaced when fitting new pads?
It is good practice on a Freelander 1. New pads on seized pins wear unevenly straight away and the disc suffers. If the pins are stiff, the boots are split, or the old grease has dried out, fitting this kit at the same time as pads is the sensible call.
Is fitting guide pins a DIY job?
It is within reach of most home mechanics. The caliper unbolts from its carrier without opening the hydraulic line, so no brake bleeding is involved. Use a rubber safe brake grease on the new pins, since ordinary grease attacks the boots.
