IRD Unit (Intermediate Reduction Drive) for the four-wheel-drive transmission, on four-cylinder engine variants.
The IRD bolts to the gearbox and incorporates the front differential, driving the front output shafts. A transfer gear set within the unit turns the drive through ninety degrees to feed the rear propeller shaft, sending torque rearward to the viscous coupling unit and rear differential.
