Brand Britpart XD
Crown Wheel & Pinion for the Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) unit.

The IRD sits between the gearbox output and the rear driveline, turning the drive through 90° to feed the propshaft and rear differential in the permanent four-wheel-drive system. The crown wheel and pinion are the matched final-drive gear pair carried inside the IRD housing.

They are supplied and must be fitted as a set: the pair is lapped together at manufacture, so mixing components from different sets prevents the correct gear mesh and backlash from being achieved.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BK 0084B crown wheel and pinion?
The BK 0084B is the crown wheel and pinion for the Freelander 1 Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD). It's the matched final-drive gear pair inside the IRD, turning the drive through 90 degrees to feed the propshaft and rear differential in the permanent four-wheel-drive system.
Do the crown wheel and pinion have to be fitted as a set?
Yes, the crown wheel and pinion must be fitted as a set. The pair is lapped together at manufacture, so mixing gears from different sets prevents correct mesh and backlash. It's a specialist job, typically done with the IRD removed from the Freelander 1.
Where does the IRD sit and which engines does this fit?
The IRD on the Freelander 1 sits between the gearbox output and rear driveline. This Britpart XD crown wheel and pinion fits the 1.8L K-Series petrol and 2.0L Td4 diesel from 1997-2006, serving as the internal final-drive gear set for that unit.
Why do Freelander 1 IRD gears fail?
IRD gears on the Freelander 1 typically wear or whine when the unit runs low on oil or after mismatched tyres load the drivetrain. Symptoms include a rising howl or vibration from underneath. Left unchecked, worn gears can seize and damage the IRD.
