The brake master cylinder is operated directly by the brake pedal. It displaces hydraulic fluid through the brake lines and distributes pressure to the wheel-end components. All Land Rovers in this collection use a master cylinder regardless of whether they have drum or disc brakes at the wheel.
A wheel cylinder is a slave cylinder used only in drum brake assemblies. Hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder pushes the wheel cylinder pistons outward, pressing the brake shoes against the drum to create braking force. Wheel cylinders are not present on disc brake models, where brake calipers perform the equivalent function.
Repair kits are available for both components, containing piston seals, O-rings, and related sealing items. They are suitable where the cylinder bore is free of corrosion or scoring. Where bore damage is present, a full replacement unit is the correct choice.

Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 vehicles use drum brakes on all four wheels and require both a master cylinder and wheel cylinders at each corner. The Girling hydraulic system was standard on Series 2 and Series 3 vehicles, and Girling-compatible components are listed for these models. Brake shoes and drums for Series vehicles are in a separate collection.
Land Rover 90 and 110 production began in 1983, and the range was renamed Defender in 1990. For this collection, Classic Defender refers to the coil-sprung 90, 110, and Defender line through to 2016. Early 90 and 110 models retained drum brakes on the rear axle; later variants moved to disc brakes on all four wheels. Master cylinders are listed throughout the Classic Defender production run. Wheel cylinders apply to rear-drum-era variants only.
Freelander 1 (1997 to 2006) uses disc brakes on the front axle and drums on the rear. Master cylinder and rear wheel cylinder components are both available for Freelander 1.
Range Rover Classic, Range Rover P38 (1994 to 2002), and Range Rover L322 (2002 to 2012) are covered for master cylinder components and repair kits. Discovery 1 and Discovery 2 are all-disc systems; master cylinder coverage applies to both.
Brake master cylinders are safety-critical hydraulic components. OEM-quality alternatives manufactured to original specification are the appropriate choice for most applications. On Series and Classic Defender vehicles with original Girling-type hydraulics, verify compatibility before fitting non-Girling spec parts, as bore dimensions and fluid port threads can differ between specifications.

Classic Defender: Brake master cylinder specification varies by VIN, model year, wheelbase, ABS/non-ABS equipment, engine era, and rear brake layout. The 200Tdi, 300Tdi, Td5, and Puma (2.4 and 2.2 TDCi from 2007 onwards) periods are useful guide points, but they should not be used as the only fitment check. Provide your VIN and build year when searching to confirm the correct specification.
Series vehicles: The key variables for Series 2 and Series 3 master cylinder selection are wheelbase (88 inch or 109 inch), single-circuit or dual-circuit hydraulics, and whether the vehicle retains its original Girling-specification components. Series 3 master cylinders are available in several variants. Your VIN plate, chassis plate details, and build year are the most reliable identification source on pre-1985 vehicles, where part number supersession is extensive.
Range Rover L322: Master cylinder variants differ between early BMW-engined models and later Jaguar and Ford TDV8-engined L322 vehicles. Confirm your engine type and build year before ordering.
LHD and RHD: Do not assume brake master cylinders are interchangeable between left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive vehicles. On some older Series and Defender applications the cylinder body may appear similar, but pipe routing, reservoir position, servo, pedal box, and pushrod arrangements can differ. On later platforms such as Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport L320, LHD and RHD master cylinder part numbers are different. Confirm by VIN, model year, ABS specification, and drive side before ordering.
Workshop NotesBench bleeding the master cylinder before installation removes air from the bore and reduces the time needed to bleed the full brake system afterwards. It also prevents air lock at the top of the brake circuit during initial priming.
Use the fluid grade specified for your model. DOT 4 is standard for most Land Rover and Range Rover applications in this collection. Do not mix brake fluid types, and flush the system if existing fluid is discoloured or contaminated.
When ordering, do not confuse brake master cylinder parts with clutch master cylinder parts. On some Land Rover applications the two systems share a reservoir assembly, but the cylinders have different bore dimensions and port arrangements and are not interchangeable.
Torque master cylinder mounting fasteners to the vehicle specification. On Discovery 1 and Discovery 2, the master cylinder bolts directly to the brake booster (servo) studs; over-tightening these fasteners can strip the threads or crack the cylinder flange casting, leading to unsafe pedal movement.

It is operated by the brake pedal and converts foot pressure into hydraulic pressure, sending that pressure through the brake lines to the wheel-end components. A wheel cylinder is a slave cylinder used only in drum brake assemblies. It receives hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder and pushes outward against the brake shoes to create braking force. All Land Rovers in this range use a brake master cylinder. Wheel cylinders are only present on models with drum brakes: Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, early Classic Defender rear axles, and Freelander 1 rear axles. Models with all-disc brakes, such as Discovery 1, Discovery 2, and Range Rover P38, use caliper pistons instead of wheel cylinders.
The most common sign is a brake pedal that sinks slowly toward the floor under steady pressure, even with no visible external fluid leak. This indicates the internal seals have failed and fluid is bypassing the piston rather than building pressure. Other signs include a spongy or inconsistent pedal feel, an unexplained gradual loss of brake fluid from the reservoir, and on Series and Classic Defender vehicles, fluid tracking down the bulkhead from the master cylinder mounting. Any confirmed internal bypass is a service priority and the vehicle should not be driven until the fault is addressed.
A repair kit contains the internal piston seals, O-rings, and usually a dust seal and return spring. It is designed for use when the cylinder bore is smooth and free of corrosion or scoring. Repair kits are a cost-effective option for Series and Classic Defender applications where the bore is in good condition, particularly on original Girling-type master cylinders where full replacement units carry a significant cost premium. If the bore shows pitting, scoring, or corrosion, a repair kit will not restore reliable performance and a full replacement unit is the correct choice. On safety-critical hydraulic components, bore condition always determines whether a rebuild is appropriate.
