Land Rover shock absorbers control body movement, keep the tyres planted on rough ground and protect the rest of the suspension from shock loads. This collection covers complete dampers, MacPherson strut assemblies and heavy-duty off-road coilovers, along with the fitting hardware that wears alongside them: turret brackets, mounts, bushes, boots and washers. It spans the full Land Rover and Range Rover range, from Series leaf-sprung dampers through to modern coil-sprung struts.

Air-suspension parts and coil springs live in their own collections, so you land on the exact part your vehicle uses. Budget Parts has supplied Land Rover parts for more than 25 years, with stock held across our Dutch warehouse network for fast EU dispatch. The range runs from budget shock bushes to premium performance dampers, so whether you want a single genuine replacement or a full off-road setup, it is here.
A shock absorber (damper) turns suspension movement into heat, damping the bounce of the spring so the wheel follows the ground instead of skipping over it. On a Land Rover that job is harder than on a road car: heavy axles, tall springs and off-road articulation all put more work through the damper. Worn units show up as body roll, nose dive under braking, a floating ride and uneven tyre wear. Because the damper works as part of the wider Land Rover axle, suspension and steering system, it is worth checking the mounts, bushes and springs at the same time.
This page brings together the complete damper range for Series, Defender, Discovery, Freelander and Range Rover models, plus the shock-specific brackets, turrets, bushes and boots that fail with age. Vehicles with air suspension may use an air strut, a damper-with-air-spring assembly or a separate damper paired with an air spring, so those parts are kept in the air suspension collection. Check whether your vehicle needs a conventional damper or an air-suspension part before ordering.
Buying GuideThree things decide which damper you need: the model and build date, the axle position (front or rear), and how you use the vehicle. Standard replacements restore the original ride. Gas-charged and monotube dampers can resist fade better under heavy load and on corrugated tracks, depending on design. Off-road coilovers and lift-matched dampers suit raised or heavily loaded builds. Most listings in this collection are OEM-grade, so you get original-equipment quality without the genuine-parts premium.
Genuine, OEM and aftermarket. Genuine dampers carry the Land Rover badge and part number. OEM or OES units are supplied by the original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, such as BWI, Bilstein, Monroe or Girling, and are built to match the original fit, quality and performance without the genuine-box premium. Aftermarket covers the upgrade and off-road names, including Terrafirma, Old Man Emu, Koni, ARB and Pro Comp, where the focus is extra travel, load capacity or damping control rather than a like-for-like replacement. For a standard repair, an OEM or OES damper is usually the sensible balance of cost and quality; for expedition or lifted vehicles, use dampers matched to the spring height, axle load and intended use, paired with the right coil springs.
FitmentThe table below is a quick guide to how each Land Rover and Range Rover generation is damped and where its parts sit. Air-sprung models are routed to the Air Suspension collection, while trims and base specs that run coil springs are covered here. Where a generation was offered with both, confirm your vehicle by VIN or build before ordering.
| Model | Years | Damper setup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series 1 | 1948 to 1958 | Telescopic, leaf-sprung | Length-specific front and rear |
| Series 2, 2A and 3 | 1958 to 1985 | Telescopic, leaf-sprung | 88 and 109 wheelbase lengths differ |
| Defender (90 / 110 / 130 family) | 1983 to 2016 | Coil-sprung telescopic | Defender name from 1990; standard, HD and off-road options |
| Defender (L663) | 2020 onwards | Passive coil or electronic air | Coil-sprung damper parts here; air-suspension parts in Air Suspension. Confirm by VIN |
| Discovery 1 | 1989 to 1998 | Coil-sprung telescopic | Front and rear part numbers differ |
| Discovery 2 | 1998 to 2004 | Coil or rear air (SLS) | Both ACE and SLS variants use the conventional dampers listed here |
| Discovery 3 and 4 | 2004 to 2016 | Air or factory coil | Base and commercial specs used coils; also suits coil-converted vehicles |
| Discovery 5 | 2017 onwards | Air or factory coil | Base specs use coil struts here; air struts in Air Suspension |
| Discovery Sport | 2014 onwards | Coil-sprung suspension, adaptive dampers on some | MacPherson front struts; confirm rear damper type by VIN |
| Freelander 1 | 1997 to 2006 | MacPherson struts | Strut assemblies on both front and rear axles |
| Freelander 2 | 2006 to 2014 | Coil struts | Front and rear |
| Range Rover Classic | 1970 to 1996 | Coil-sprung telescopic | Air suspension on late high-spec models (1992 to 1996) |
| Range Rover P38 to L460 | 1994 onwards | Mostly electronic air | Air by generation and trim; confirm by VIN or build |
| RR Sport, Evoque, Velar | 2005 onwards | Air or coil by model | RR Sport generally air; Evoque coil / adaptive struts here; Velar coil or air by model |
Match the part to your specific vehicle before ordering. Work from the build date and VIN rather than the model year alone, because suspension changes often fall mid-year. The VIN plate is on the chassis or under the bonnet depending on model; a VIN or chassis-number search returns the exact suspension build, engine and any self-levelling or air-suspension option fitted. Check three things: front or rear axle position, whether the vehicle runs coil springs or air suspension, and the mounting type at each end (eye, stud or fork). Where a listing gives a chassis-number range, use it: several generations changed damper spec partway through production.
FittingShock absorbers are a safety-critical part. Fit them as a pair per axle and torque all fixings to the correct figure for your model. If in doubt on a lifted or converted vehicle, confirm the damper length against your spring setup before fitting.

Land Rover axle and swivel partsGenuine dampers carry the Land Rover badge and part number. OEM or OES units are supplied by original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers and are intended to match the original fit, quality and performance. Aftermarket covers upgrade and off-road brands like Terrafirma, Old Man Emu, Koni, ARB and Pro Comp, where the focus may be extra travel, load capacity or damping control rather than a like-for-like standard replacement. For a standard repair, an OEM or OES damper is usually the sensible balance of cost and quality.
Yes. Replace both fronts or both rears together so damping stays balanced from side to side. A new shock next to a worn one causes uneven handling and faster wear. As a guide, dampers are worth inspecting around every 50,000 km or whenever the ride quality changes.
The common signs are excessive body roll, nose dive under braking, a floating or bouncing ride over bumps, uneven or cupped tyre wear, and knocking from the top mount. Any of these on a Land Rover means the dampers are due for inspection.
Front and rear dampers differ in length, rating and mounting type, whether that is an eye, a stud or a fork. Match by axle position and by the vehicle build date rather than by appearance alone, because several models changed spec partway through production.
On higher-mileage vehicles, yes. Perished rubber mounts and bushes cause knocks and let the new damper move in its mounting, so fitting them together is the reliable repair. Many shock listings include the matching bush or mount kit.
Many newer Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and later Discovery models use electronic air suspension. Depending on the model and axle, the replacement may be an air strut, a damper-with-air-spring assembly, or a separate damper used with an air spring. Use this page for conventional coil-sprung dampers and coil-converted vehicles, and use the Air Suspension collection for air springs, compressors, valve blocks and air-suspension assemblies. Always confirm by VIN or build before ordering.
