A ball joint is a ball and socket that lets one part swivel against another while carrying load, sealed by a rubber or polyurethane boot that keeps the grease in and dirt out. Land Rover suspension uses several: the large rear A-frame ball joint that locates the axle on coil-sprung live-axle models, the upper link ball joint, the anti-roll bar drop link ball joints, the front upper and lower ball joints on the open-knuckle Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 axles, and the upper and lower control arm ball joints on independent-suspension models. When a joint wears it develops play, which shows up as a knock over bumps, vague or wandering handling, and a failed boot that has let water in. This collection sits within the wider Land Rover axle, suspension and steering system.
It groups the suspension ball joints for Series, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models. Track rod ends and tie rod ends are ball joints by design, but because they are part of the steering linkage they are listed with Steering Components rather than duplicated here, so look there for those. Buying GuideIdentify the joint first. The rear A-frame ball joint on a Defender, Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic locates the back axle and is a common wear point; the upper and lower arm ball joints on an independent-suspension Discovery 3 or later, Range Rover L322 onward or Range Rover Sport sit in the front control arms. Anti-roll bar drop link ball joints are smaller linkage joints. Confirm which one you need and the side, since front upper and lower joints and left and right parts are not interchangeable.
Decide between a bare joint, a kit or just a boot. A complete ball joint is the usual replacement, a kit adds the fixings or bracket where needed, and a boot or dust cover on its own suits a joint that is still sound but has a split boot caught early. A boot that has been split long enough to let water and grit in usually means the joint is already worn, so inspect it rather than only replacing the boot.
Genuine, OEM and aftermarket. Genuine ball joints carry the Land Rover part number. OEM or OES joints come from original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, and brands such as Lemforder, Delphi, Moog and Meyle may appear as OE, OES or aftermarket depending on the specific item. Aftermarket also covers value ranges and heavy-duty or adjustable off-road joints for lifted and hard-worked vehicles. On a steering and suspension joint, a quality OEM or OES part is usually the sensible choice; heavy-duty joints suit vehicles running a lift or extra load.

Work from the build date and VIN, then confirm the exact joint and its position. Front upper and lower arm joints differ, left and right parts can differ, and on the independent-suspension models the ball joint may be supplied on its own or only as part of a complete control arm, so check how your part is sold. On live-axle models, identify whether you need the rear A-frame ball joint, an upper link joint, or a smaller anti-roll bar drop link joint. If you are replacing a track rod end or tie rod end, order it from the steering range rather than here.
FittingBall joints are safety-critical steering and suspension parts. Torque the taper to the correct figure, fit new locknuts and split pins where specified, and confirm the joint is fully seated. A neglected joint with a split boot can develop enough play to fail. Book a wheel alignment after replacing a front arm joint.

Land Rover shock absorbers and dampersA worn ball joint develops play, which shows up as a knock or clonk over bumps, vague or wandering handling, and uneven tyre wear on the front joints. A split or perished boot is a strong warning sign, since once dirt and water get in the joint wears quickly. With the wheel raised you can often feel the play by levering at the joint or checking for free movement between the arm and the upright. Catch it early, because a badly worn joint is a roadworthiness failure at periodic inspection such as the MOT or APK.
On coil-sprung live-axle Land Rovers such as the Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic, a central A-frame locates the rear axle sideways, and it connects to the axle through one large ball joint. That A-frame ball joint takes constant load and is a common wear point, giving rear-end wander, a clonk over bumps, or a feeling that the back of the vehicle steers itself. Its wear is often mistaken for worn bushes, so check it directly. The Discovery 2 uses a Watts linkage at the rear instead.
Yes, a track rod end and a tie rod end are both ball joints by design. Because they form part of the steering linkage rather than the suspension, they are listed with the steering parts rather than in this collection, so look under Steering Components for track rod ends, tie rod ends and drag link parts. This collection covers the suspension and linkage ball joints such as the A-frame, upper link, anti-roll bar and control arm joints.
For the front suspension arm ball joints on independent-suspension models, yes, since they can affect camber and toe, so book a wheel alignment after fitting. Linkage joints such as an anti-roll bar link joint do not set alignment. On the live-axle models the A-frame and upper link joints locate the axle rather than set front toe, but it is still worth checking the geometry if other steering parts were disturbed.
Sometimes. If the boot has only just split and the joint still feels tight with no play, a new boot or dust cover can save it. If the boot has been open long enough to let water and grit in, the joint has usually started to wear and is better replaced. Always check the joint for play before deciding, rather than fitting a new boot over a joint that is already on its way out.
