Water pumps, thermostats and cooling fans work as one circuit. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator, the thermostat controls how much of that coolant passes to the radiator according to coolant temperature, and the fan draws air through the radiator when airflow from road speed is not enough. Each depends on the other two to keep coolant within the temperature range the engine is designed for, which is why they sit together here inside Land Rover Cooling & Heating Parts, alongside the radiators, hoses and oil coolers.
Parts here fit the Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Series, Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Freelander and Range Rover families. Listings are titled by part number, and the Land Rover parts catalogues are the place to confirm the original number for your vehicle before ordering.
WATER PUMPSThe pumps for the engines below are mechanical, belt-driven pumps, but the belt that drives them and the way they seal differ by engine, and both affect what else to check when ordering.
Pumps for the Ingenium and 3.0 TDV6 engines are listed by part number. Some Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494 vehicles also carry an auxiliary coolant pump, and auxiliary coolant pumps are listed in this collection by part number. Drive belts are listed under Land Rover Engine Parts; on the 300Tdi, Td5 and Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6 the auxiliary belt is worth checking while the pump is off.
THERMOSTATSThermostats differ by engine in three ways: the opening temperature, whether the thermostat is sold alone or inside a housing, and how it seals. Opening temperatures for the engines where the workshop manuals give a clear figure are in the questions at the foot of this page.
The Discovery 4 thermostat housing guide below covers what to replace with that housing; this page lists the parts.
COOLING FANSThe fan arrangement depends on the engine, and the parts differ with it.
Viscous couplings, cooling fans, cowls, shrouds, electric fan motors and fan assemblies are listed as separate parts.
Fan spanners are listed under Land Rover Workshop Tools.
BUYING GUIDEGenuine water pumps, thermostats and cooling fans carry the Land Rover part number. OEM or OES water pumps, thermostats and cooling fans come from original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, and brands such as Pierburg, Mahle and Bearmach may appear as OE, OES or aftermarket depending on the specific item. Aftermarket also covers independent replacement brands.
Budget Parts lists Genuine, OEM and aftermarket parts in this collection, and which tiers exist differs from part to part. For thermostats, check the specification before the tier: the opening temperature determines when the thermostat begins to regulate coolant flow to the radiator, so a thermostat at the wrong rating is the wrong part whichever tier it comes from.
Ordering together. The system is drained, at least partly, to change a pump or a thermostat, so coolant of the correct specification is needed to refill it. Viscous couplings and cooling fans are listed separately.

Land Rover Electrical PartsStart with the engine. The same model was built with several engines: a Discovery 1 may have the 200Tdi, the 300Tdi, a Rover V8 or the 2.0 Mpi petrol depending on year and market, a classic Defender may have one of several engines, including the 2.25 and 2.5 units, the 200Tdi, 300Tdi and Td5, the 2.4 and 2.2 Puma and the V8, and a Discovery 4 diesel may be a 2.7 or a 3.0 TDV6. Engine code is the first check, and where a part changed during a generation the model year or VIN settles it. Listings in this collection are titled by part number, so confirm that number against your vehicle before ordering.
Check the individual listing to see whether the required gasket or O-rings are included. How the pump seals depends on the engine: on the 300Tdi and the Rover V8 it seals with a flat gasket that has its own part number, ERR3284 on the 300Tdi and ERR2428 or ERR4077 on the V8 depending on engine and build, and on the Td5 it seals with O-rings, which the workshop manual renews whenever the pump or its cover is refitted. The cooling system is drained to change the pump, so have coolant of the correct specification ready to refill it. Whether the drive belt belongs on the same order depends on the engine: on the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 the pump is driven by the timing belt and timing belt kits for that engine are offered with the pump included, while on the 300Tdi, Td5 and Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6 the pump runs on the auxiliary belt, which is worth inspecting while it is off.
The rating is engine-specific and it matters. The thermostat stays closed while the engine warms up, then opens progressively to control how much coolant reaches the radiator, so its specified opening temperature determines the point at which the cooling system starts regulating coolant temperature. From the Land Rover workshop manuals: the 300Tdi uses an 88 degree thermostat; the Td5 thermostat starts to open at about 82 degrees and is fully open at about 96 degrees; the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 thermostat starts to open at 83 degrees and is fully open at about 91 degrees; and the Defender 2.4 Puma thermostat starts to open at 82 degrees in the 2007 model year manual. Rover V8 ratings differ between the Range Rover Classic, P38 and Discovery 2 manuals, so match the rating specified for your engine and year rather than assuming one figure covers the family.
It depends on how the engine packages the thermostat. On the Td5 the thermostat and its remote housing are catalogued as one assembly, PEM100990, for the Defender and early Discovery 2, so the housing comes with the thermostat; on later Discovery 2 vehicles, confirm the part against the VIN. On the 300Tdi the thermostat and the thermostat housing gasket, ERR3490, are separate parts, and the workshop manual removes the thermostat through the outlet elbow without taking the housing off. On the 2.7 TDV6 the thermostat and its housing gasket, 1341370, are also separate parts, and the 3.0 TDV6 uses different part numbers again.
It depends on the engine. The 300Tdi, the Td5, the Rover V8 in the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic from the 1995 model year, and the Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6 have an engine-driven viscous fan. Air conditioning adds electric condenser fans alongside the viscous fan on several models: on an air-conditioned Discovery 2 Td5 they run whenever the compressor is engaged and also when coolant temperature is high, and the P38 V8 up to the 1999 model year has them as well. The Freelander 1 KV6 uses electric cooling fans, and the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 and Discovery Sport 2.2 diesel and 2.0 petrol are catalogued with an electric radiator fan and motor assembly.
