About Land Rover Wheel Bearings and Seals

The wheel bearing lets the hub spin freely on the stub axle while carrying the vehicle's weight and the loads from cornering and braking. Alongside it, the hub and stub-axle oil seals keep the grease or axle oil in and the water and grit out. When a bearing wears it drones, rumbles or growls, usually rising with speed and changing as the vehicle is loaded up in a corner, and it can leave play at the wheel. A failed seal lets a bearing run dry or contaminates the brake, so seals are renewed with the bearing as a matter of course. Choosing the Right Wheel Bearing and Seal

Start by identifying the bearing arrangement for your exact model, axle and build date, because it follows the vehicle rather than the suspension layout. The traditional beam-axle models, Series, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic and most Defenders, use serviceable inner and outer taper roller bearings that are adjusted to the specified hub end float and supplied with the seals. Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 and many later models use a complete hub bearing unit or hub assembly that is fitted as one part and not adjusted, often with the ABS sensor or encoder built in. Confirm which arrangement you have before ordering, since the parts and the job are different.

Buy the seals with the bearings. A hub bearing kit may include the inner and outer taper rollers, the hub oil seal and, where listed, the stub-axle seal, so check the individual product to see what is in the box. Where you are chasing a leak rather than a noise, an individual hub or stub-axle oil seal is available on its own. Confirm the wheel-speed sensor and encoder arrangement by VIN, since the ABS trigger may sit on the hub, on the CV joint, or be built into the bearing seal.

Genuine, OEM and aftermarket. Genuine bearings and seals carry the Land Rover part number. OEM or OES parts come from original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, and bearing and seal brands such as Timken, SKF, FAG and Corteco may appear as OE, OES or aftermarket depending on the specific item. Confirming the Right Bearing for Your Vehicle

Work from the build date and VIN, then confirm the bearing arrangement, since it follows the model and build rather than the suspension layout. Series, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic and most Defenders take serviceable taper roller bearings supplied with seals, while Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 and many later models take a complete hub bearing unit or assembly that is not adjusted. Confirm the wheel-speed sensor and encoder arrangement by VIN, because the ABS trigger may sit on the hub, on the CV joint, or be built into the bearing seal, and the wrong hub can leave the sensor without a signal. Note front or rear and, on the P38, the side, since the parts differ across most of the range.

Common Fitting Notes

Renew the hub grease seal that is disturbed during dismantling, and inspect the stub-axle seal, renewing it if it is leaking, damaged or removed. A new bearing behind an old seal will not stay clean or greased for long.
On the serviceable taper roller hubs, adjust to the specified hub end float using the procedure for the exact axle and build. Too tight overheats the bearing, too loose gives play and uneven tyre wear.
Pack taper roller bearings with the correct wheel bearing grease on assembly. Do not run them dry or overfill the hub.
Fit a complete hub unit or assembly as one part and do not attempt to adjust it. Torque the hub nut to the specified figure.
Confirm the wheel-speed sensor and encoder arrangement, and check the sensor gap where the encoder is built into the hub, CV joint or bearing seal, so the signal is restored after fitting.
Inspect the stub axle and hub seating surfaces for scoring before fitting new bearings, since a damaged surface will fail a new bearing early.

Important

Wheel bearings are a safety-critical wear part. Adjust serviceable taper roller hubs to the specified end float, torque complete hub units as specified, and renew the disturbed hub seal with the bearing. A dragging or noisy bearing left in service can seize or overheat the brake.

How do I know if a Land Rover wheel bearing is worn?

A worn wheel bearing usually drones, rumbles or growls, and the noise rises with road speed and often changes as the vehicle loads and unloads the bearing through a corner. You may also feel play if you rock the wheel at the top and bottom with the vehicle raised, though a swivel bearing, ball joint or suspension joint can give similar movement, so isolate the source before replacing parts. Catch it early, because a bearing left to fail can seize or overheat the brake.

Should I replace the seals when I change a wheel bearing?

Renew the hub grease seal that is disturbed when the hub is off, since a new bearing behind an old or hardened seal will not stay sealed and greased for long. Inspect the stub-axle seal and renew it if it is leaking, damaged or removed. Many hub bearing kits for the taper roller axles include the seals, so check the individual product. What is the difference between a taper roller bearing and a sealed hub unit?

The traditional beam-axle models, Series, Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic, use two taper roller bearings per hub, an inner and an outer, that are packed with grease and adjusted to the specified hub end float. Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 and many later models use a complete hub bearing unit or assembly that arrives greased and sealed, is fitted as one part and is not adjusted. Bearing type follows the model, axle and build rather than the suspension layout, so confirm which your vehicle uses before ordering.

Do I need to set a preload on Land Rover wheel bearings?

On the serviceable taper roller hubs, the bearings are adjusted to a specified hub end float using the procedure for that axle and build, not a general preload, so the bearing turns freely without play. Too tight overheats the bearing and too loose leaves play and uneven tyre wear. Complete hub units, as used on Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 and many later models, are not adjustable and are simply torqued to the specified figure.

Are Land Rover ABS sensors affected by a worn wheel bearing?

They can be.
