The Range Rover Classic is the first-generation Range Rover, produced at Solihull from 1970 to 1996, with over 317,000 vehicles built across a 26-year run. It was succeeded by the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001); later flagships up to the current L460 are listed on the Range Rover parts hub.
The "Classic" name was applied officially from 1994, when the second-generation P38 launched alongside the original model, to distinguish the two in the market. If your vehicle was built between 1994 and 1996, it is a Range Rover Classic, not a P38. Petrol-specific parts including carburettor components, Lucas 14CUX injection parts, and V8 cooling system components are sub-era-sensitive. A 3.5 carburettor-era part will not fit a 3.9 EFI vehicle. On the diesel side, the VM, 200Tdi, and 300Tdi engine families share the chassis but differ substantially in ancillaries, cooling, and fuel system parts. Confirm your engine code from the engine identification plate before ordering diesel-specific components.

Two identification systems apply across the Classic's production run, and which one you have depends on your build year.
Pre-1980 Classics use a Land Rover-format chassis number rather than the modern 17-digit VIN. The chassis number on these vehicles is stamped on the right-hand front chassis rail and on a small plate riveted to the engine bay bulkhead. It typically begins with the model and body code, followed by a sequential serial number.
From 1980 onwards the Classic carries a 17-digit ISO VIN, mounted on a plate on the driver's-side bulkhead in the engine bay and on a second plate visible through the windscreen at the top of the dashboard. The 10th character encodes the model year.

The Range Rover Classic used coil spring suspension throughout the majority of its production life. Electronic air suspension (EAS) was introduced from late 1992 for high-specification 1993 model year vehicles and was standard on the 108-inch LSE long-wheelbase variant. Air suspension parts — compressors, valve blocks, air springs, height sensors — apply only to these later vehicles. Earlier Classics use conventional coil springs and do not use EAS components.
The presence of an air compressor in the engine bay and ride-height sensors at each corner are the primary visual identifiers for EAS fitment. Confirm before ordering suspension-specific parts.
The Range Rover Classic body uses aluminium outer panels on a steel inner frame. The steel structural elements — sills, floor sections, bulkhead areas, and chassis rails — are susceptible to corrosion, particularly on vehicles that have spent years in northern European conditions or on salted roads. Preventative treatment with cavity wax and underseal extends chassis and body life substantially and is a near-universal step in any Classic restoration. A Range Rover built in 1995 is most likely a Range Rover Classic. Land Rover applied the "Classic" name from 1994 when the second-generation P38 launched alongside the original model, and continued Classic production through 1996 for certain configurations alongside early P38 production. The two are entirely separate models on different platforms with different engines and electronics; parts are not interchangeable. The clearest distinguishing features are the body style (Classic has the original square-edged 1970s shape; P38 has the rounded 1994-era styling) and the chassis number or VIN plate on the engine bay bulkhead.
