Lambda Sensor - Front (pre-catalyst oxygen sensor) for the exhaust and engine management system of V6 and V8 petrol engines.
The sensor threads into the exhaust ahead of the catalytic converter and measures residual oxygen in the exhaust gas. Its output is the closed-loop feedback signal the engine control module uses to hold the air/fuel mixture at stoichiometric, which in turn governs catalyst conversion efficiency and fuel consumption.
The unit is heated, allowing closed-loop control to begin shortly after a cold start. A slowed or contaminated sensor commonly shows as rough running, raised fuel consumption or a fuel-trim fault code. It is not serviceable and is replaced complete.
