Frequently asked questions

What does the camshaft sprocket do?
The camshaft sprocket mounts on the nose of the camshaft and is driven by the timing chain from the crankshaft sprocket. It turns the camshaft in time with the crankshaft so the valves open and close at the right point in each cycle. It sits in the engine timing drive at the front of the engine.
Where is the camshaft sprocket located?
The camshaft sprocket is located at the front of the engine in the timing case, on the end of the camshaft. The timing chain runs from the crankshaft sprocket up to it. You reach it by removing the timing cover, so it's usually accessed during a timing chain job.
Should I replace the timing chain at the same time?
It's usually worth replacing the timing chain, and often the crankshaft sprocket, at the same time as the camshaft sprocket. The teeth wear together as a set, so fitting a new sprocket against a stretched chain typically shortens its life. Most rebuilders renew the whole timing drive together.
Which Series Land Rovers does this camshaft sprocket fit?
This camshaft sprocket fits the Series I with the 2.25L four-cylinder petrol engine, and the Series II, IIA and III with the 2.25L four-cylinder and 2.6L six-cylinder petrol engines. Confirm your engine before ordering, as it's specific to these petrol units.
