What is the camshaft lock washer for?

The camshaft lock washer retains the camshaft gear securing bolt at the front of the camshaft, part of the engine timing drive. Once the bolt is torqued, a tab of the washer is folded against the bolt head to lock it mechanically so engine vibration can't shake the camshaft gear bolt loose.

Can the lock washer be reused?

Lock washers like this are typically single-use. The locking tab work-hardens and can crack once it's been bent and unbent, so a reused washer may not hold the camshaft bolt securely. Fit a new washer whenever the camshaft gear bolt is disturbed and fold a fresh tab firmly against the bolt head.
