Frequently asked questions

What does the timing chain vibration damper do?
The timing chain vibration damper bears against the timing chain inside the timing cover to suppress whip and oscillation. It helps keep chain tension stable and reduces wear on the chain and sprockets on Land Rover four- and six-cylinder engines.
Where is the timing chain vibration damper fitted?
It's mounted inside the timing cover at the front of the engine, bearing against the timing chain that drives the camshaft. You reach it by removing the timing cover, so it's typically replaced during timing chain or front cover work.
Which engines use this vibration damper?
This damper fits the four- and six-cylinder engines in Land Rover Series II, IIA and III, and the four-cylinder Defender engines. It isn't used on the V8, so confirm your engine isn't a V8 before ordering.
What happens if the timing chain damper wears out?
A worn timing chain damper lets the chain whip and slap, which typically causes a rattle from the timing cover and speeds up wear on the chain and sprockets. Replacing it during timing chain work keeps the drive quiet and properly damped.
